Energetic Cord Cutting: What It Is and How It Works

Cord cutting is an energy healing practice that involves intentionally severing the energetic ties that form between you and other people, places, situations, or even old versions of yourself. Think of it as a spiritual "it's not you, it's me" conversation, except you don't have to send a text.

What Are Cords, Exactly?

When we interact with others, especially in emotionally charged relationships, we form energetic cords. These are essentially streams of energy that run between your energy field and someone else's. Not all cords are bad. Healthy connections with people we love create cords too. The ones we want to cut are the ones that are draining you, keeping you stuck, or tethering you to something that no longer serves your highest good.

You might have cords to an ex, a difficult family member, a job you left three years ago but still think about every Sunday night, or even an old version of yourself you've outgrown.

How Does the Process Work?

There are a few different ways to do this, and you can choose what resonates with you.

  1. Meditation and visualization - You enter a relaxed, meditative state and visualize the cord connecting you to the person or situation. You then see yourself cutting it, usually with a beam of light, a sword, scissors, or whatever image feels right. Archangel Michael is often called in to help with this, since he's basically the energetic bouncer of the angelic realm.

  2. Reiki cord cutting - A practitioner can do this as part of a healing session, working directly in your energy field to locate and release those ties. It can be surprisingly emotional, which is completely normal. (Reiki Sessions are offered here)

  3. Candle ritual - Some people use two candles tied together with string, setting intentions and then cutting the string as part of their release ceremony.

  4. Spoken or written intention - Sometimes a simple, clear statement of release, spoken out loud or written and burned, is enough to get the job done.

A Few Important Things to Know

Cord cutting does NOT erase love or good memories. It releases the unhealthy energetic dynamic, not the relationship itself.

You may need to do it more than once. Some cords are stubborn, and that is totally okay. If you find yourself slipping back into old patterns of thinking about someone or feeling drained after contact, it might be time for a follow-up session.

After cord cutting, drink water, rest if you need to, and be gentle with yourself. Your energy body just did some real work.

It is also worth noting that cords can regenerate, especially if you keep engaging with that person or situation in the same old way. The energetic work is most effective when you pair it with real-world boundaries too.

A Guided Cord Cutting Meditation

This can be read aloud, recorded as a voice memo, or used as a script for guided sessions.

Find a comfortable position, either seated or lying down.

Close your eyes and take three slow, deep breaths.

With each exhale, let your body get a little heavier, a little more relaxed.

Bring your awareness to your heart center and imagine a warm, golden light

beginning to glow there.

With every breath, that light grows a little brighter, a little warmer, expanding outward

until it surrounds your entire body in a soft, protective glow.

You are safe here. Nothing can enter this space without your permission.

Now, gently set the intention to become aware of any energetic cords that are ready

to be released.

You don't need to force anything. Simply allow whatever comes forward to come forward.

It might be a person's face, a feeling, a memory, or just a knowing.

When something comes up, acknowledge it.

You might silently say: "I see you. I honor what this connection taught me.

And I am ready to release what no longer serves me."

Now visualize the cord connecting you to this person or situation.

Notice where it attaches to your body.

See it clearly, whatever shape or color it takes for you.

Call in whatever support feels right to you.

Archangel Michael, your spirit guides, your higher self, Source energy.

Ask for assistance in cutting this cord with love and compassion, for your highest good and the highest good of all involved.

When you feel ready, see a beam of light, a sword, a pair of golden scissors, whatever resonates, and cut the cord cleanly.

Watch it dissolve completely, returning to neutral energy on both ends.

Now place your hands over the area where the cord was attached and breathe loving, healing light directly into that space.

Imagine it sealing, filling with golden light, whole and complete.

Take a moment to notice how you feel. Lighter? Emotional? Tired?

All of that is okay and normal.

When you are ready, wiggle your fingers and toes, take a deep breath,

and slowly open your eyes.

After Your Meditation

Drink a big glass of water. Ground yourself by going outside, eating something light, or holding a grounding crystal like black tourmaline or hematite. If emotions come up over the next day or two, let them move through. That is part of the process.

And remember, if you feel the cord snap back, it just means there is another layer ready to be healed. You didn't do it wrong. You just went deeper.
