Inherited Beliefs: Clearing Limiting Beliefs

Not all of your limiting beliefs are originally yours. Some of them were handed down to you long before you had any say in the matter. From your family, your culture, your community, your religion. These are the beliefs you absorbed simply by being in proximity to people who held them.

They often feel like the deepest truths because they've been with you the longest. Beliefs about money, about what's possible for people like us, about safety, about worthiness, about what a person should sacrifice or expect or be allowed to want. They can be so woven into your worldview that it's genuinely hard to see them as beliefs at all. They just seem like reality.

The first step with inherited beliefs is getting some distance from them. Enough distance to look at them and ask: is this actually mine? Did I choose this? Does this still apply to my life, or did it belong to a time and place and set of circumstances that I've moved beyond?

Releasing an inherited belief doesn't mean rejecting the people it came from. It means recognizing that you are a different person in a different context, and you get to decide what you carry forward. You are allowed to update the inheritance.

Reflection:

What beliefs did you absorb from your family or culture about worth, money, safety, or what's possible for you? When you examine one of them closely, does it actually feel true for you today?

Simple Practice:

Choose one inherited belief that doesn't quite fit anymore. Write it down and then write the word 'inherited' next to it. That single act of labeling it can start to create some healthy separation between the belief and your identity.
