Smudging and Cleansing Myths
Smudging and cleansing get treated like there is a secret rulebook nobody handed you. One wrong move and suddenly you are worried your whole apartment is still haunted by last weeks bad mood. Let's clear some of that up, pun fully intended.
Myth: It has to be white sage or it does not count.
White sage is one option among many, not the only valid one. Palo santo, rosemary, cedar, incense, sound, or even just opening a window and airing out a room can all serve the same clearing purpose. Use what you actually have access to and what feels right for you.
Myth: You need to cleanse your space every single day.
Daily cleansing is not a requirement for a functional spiritual practice. Most spaces do fine with cleansing after something heavy happens, during a seasonal shift, or whenever the room just feels stagnant. Doing it constantly is not more effective, it is just more smoke.
Myth: Cleansing permanently removes all bad energy forever.
Energy moves and shifts constantly, the same way dust resettles after you clean a room. Cleansing resets the space, it does not seal it in a permanent protective bubble. That is a different practice entirely, closer to grounding or shielding.
Myth: If you cough or sneeze during smudging, it means there was a lot of negative energy.
Sometimes smoke just makes people cough. That is a respiratory response, not a spiritual diagnosis. No need to read deep meaning into a normal reaction to burning plant matter in an enclosed room.
Myth: Only certain people are allowed to cleanse a space.
You do not need a title, certification, or lineage to clear the energy in your own home. Intentional cleansing done with care and attention is available to anyone who wants to use it, no gatekeeping required.
