What This Lunar Vibe Is All About
So here's a confession. Until pretty recently, I had no idea the moon had this whole secret naming system going on every single month. I just thought it was the moon. Big, round, sometimes orange, occasionally made me feel a little unhinged. That was the extent of my lunar knowledge.
Turns out there are twelve (sometimes thirteen) of these names, one for each full moon of the year, and they go back way further than I expected. So I've decided I'm going to write about each one as it rolls around, partly for you, but honestly mostly for me. Think of it as us figuring this out together, one full moon at a time. No prior moon knowledge required. I had none either.
Where the name actually comes from and why it's not about color
The Strawberry Moon is the full moon that lands in June, and despite what the name suggests, it's not blushing pink or secretly delicious. The name comes from Indigenous tribes, particularly the Algonquin people, who used it to mark the short window when wild strawberries ripen and are ready to harvest. So really it's less "romantic moon name" and more "ancient agricultural calendar," which honestly makes me respect it even more. People needed to track the seasons and the moon was the most reliable calendar around. No apps, no alarms, just looking up.
Other cultures have their own names for this same moon too, like the Hot Moon or the Rose Moon, all pointing to that same early summer shift. Warmth arriving. Things ripening. The earth waking up fully after a long stretch of spring transition.
The energy of the Strawberry Moon and what it might stir up
Energetically, this one feels like a harvest moment, but not in the big dramatic "everything culminates now" way some other full moons bring. It's softer than that. It's more like June is finally handing you something you planted a while ago and saying, here, this is ripe now, you can have it.
Full moons in general tend to bring things to a peak. Whatever's been quietly building in your life since the new moon often gets a little louder, a little harder to ignore, right around now. With the Strawberry Moon specifically, I notice that energy tends to be sweet rather than sharp. Less "confront your shadow" and more "notice what's actually going well." It's a good moon for gratitude, for actually tasting the good stuff in your life instead of rushing past it to the next goal.
If you've been moving fast through spring, this moon is sort of nudging you to slow down enough to enjoy summer instead of just running through it.
A small ritual idea, if you're into that sort of thing
You don't need anything elaborate here. Sit outside under the moon if you can see it, actual strawberries optional but encouraged, and just ask yourself what's ripe in your life right now. Not what you're working toward. What's already here, already good, already worth noticing.
