Body Scan Meditation: The Practice of Actually Living in Your Body
Quick question. Where are you right now? Not like, geographically. I mean are you actually here, in your body, reading this? Or are you three tabs deep into tomorrow's to do list while your body just sort of sits there like a parked car with the engine running?
No judgment. I do this constantly. I have walked into rooms and had zero memory of walking into them. I have eaten entire meals and only realized it when I looked down at an empty plate and thought, well, that happened apparently. We spend so much time living in our heads that our bodies basically become Uber drivers, just shuttling our minds around from place to place without ever getting acknowledged.
Body scan meditation is the practice of climbing into the front seat for once.
Here's what it actually is, in the most non mystical terms possible. You lie down or sit comfortably, and you slowly move your attention through different parts of your body, one at a time. Toes, feet, ankles, all the way up. You're not trying to change anything or fix anything. You're just noticing. Is there tension here? Warmth? Nothing at all? You just observe and move on.
That's it. That's the whole technique. I know it sounds suspiciously simple, almost too simple to be doing anything. But this is one of those practices where the simplicity is the entire point.
Here's where it gets interesting from a spiritual lens. Your body is not just a vehicle for your soul to get groceries done in. It is one of the very first places your intuition and your energy actually show up. That gut feeling you ignored before a decision went sideways? That showed up in your body before your mind caught on. The tightness in your chest before a hard conversation? Energy, registering in the body, ahead of conscious thought.
When you spend all your time in your head, you miss those signals completely. You're trying to read a text message while standing three rooms away from your phone. Body scan meditation brings you back into the room. It reconnects you to the part of you that has actually been picking up information the whole time, you just haven't been checking your messages.
There's also something deeply settling about this practice that goes beyond the physical. When you slow down enough to notice your own body without trying to fix or judge it, you start to build a different relationship with yourself. Less critic, more curious observer. And curiosity, as it turns out, is a much more spiritual stance toward yourself than constant evaluation ever was.
If you did last week's breathwork post, this pairs beautifully with it. Breathwork tends to stir things up and move energy around, almost like shaking a snow globe. Body scan is what happens after, when you let everything slowly settle and just notice where it landed. Activating, then integrating. Your nervous system will thank you for the full cycle.
If you want to try it, here's the simple version.
Lie down somewhere comfortable.
Close your eyes.
Starting at your feet,
slowly bring your attention upward through your body,
pausing for a few breaths at each area.
No fixing,
No judging,
Just noticing.
If your mind wanders off to write an email or relive an argument,
Gently bring it back to the body.
That's not failure,
That's literally the practice.
Give it ten minutes.
See what your body has been trying to tell you this whole time.
