Chakras and the Nervous System
An Introduction to Somatic Chakra Work
You already know your chakras. You have probably spent years learning what each one governs, what it feels like when one is blocked, and how to clear it with meditation, affirmations, or a good Reiki session. So here is a question that might reframe everything you thought you knew: what if a blocked chakra is not just an energetic problem, but a nervous system problem too?
This is where ancient energy work meets modern nervous system science, and honestly, they were talking about the same thing all along. Your chakras are not just spinning wheels of light floating somewhere above your physical body. They correspond to real clusters of nerves, glands, and organs, and they are deeply tied to how your autonomic nervous system responds to the world around you.
Over the next several posts, we are going deep into this connection. But first, let's lay the groundwork so you understand exactly why your throat tightens when you have to speak up in a meeting, why your gut clenches before a hard conversation, and why some chakra blockages simply will not budge no matter how many affirmations you repeat. Spoiler alert, it is because you have been trying to think your way out of something that lives in your body.
Your Nervous System, In Plain Terms
Your autonomic nervous system runs the show behind the scenes. It controls your heart rate, digestion, breathing, and stress response without you ever having to think about it. It has two main branches, and you have probably heard of both.
The sympathetic nervous system is your gas pedal. It is responsible for fight, flight, and the general sense of urgency that shows up when you are running late, scrolling bad news, or bracing for a difficult text message. It is meant to switch on for short bursts and then switch back off.
The parasympathetic nervous system is your brake pedal. This is your rest, digest, and connect state. It is where healing happens, where digestion actually works properly, and where you feel safe enough to let your guard down. This is the state most of us are chronically starved for.
There is a third piece worth knowing about too, called the freeze response, sometimes grouped in with fawn as well. When fight or flight is not a viable option, your system shuts down instead, leaving you numb, foggy, or disconnected. We will get deeply into freeze, fight, flight, and fawn as we move through each chakra in this series.
Where the Chakras Come In
Each chakra sits near a real physical structure in your body, a nerve plexus, a gland, an organ system. When your nervous system gets stuck in a stress response, whether that is fight, flight, freeze, or fawn, it tends to lodge itself in the chakra tied to that particular pattern.
This is why chakra blockages are not just symbolic. Chronic anxiety is not simply a solar plexus issue in the abstract sense. It is your actual sympathetic nervous system living in a state of high alert, and that physiological state shows up as tightness, heat, and reactivity right where your solar plexus lives. The energy work and the nervous system work are describing the same phenomenon from two different angles.
This also explains something a lot of clients ask me about, which is why a chakra can feel cleared during a session and then slowly creep back into blockage over the following days. If the underlying nervous system pattern has not shifted, the body will keep recreating the same energetic holding pattern because as far as your nervous system is concerned, that pattern is keeping you safe.
Causes Behind Nervous System and Chakra Patterns
The patterns we will explore in this series usually take root for a few common reasons.
• Repeated or prolonged stress that never gets a chance to fully resolve, so the body stays braced instead of returning to baseline
• Past trauma, big or small, that taught your nervous system a specific survival response and never got the memo that the danger has passed
• Chronic environments, whether that is a stressful job, a difficult relationship, or a household growing up that required you to stay hyper alert or shut down to cope
• Modern life itself, which keeps most of us mildly sympathetic dominant almost all day, every day, through notifications, deadlines, and constant stimulation
10 Signs Your Nervous System and Chakras Are Out of Sync
1. You feel wired but exhausted at the same time
Your body is stuck in sympathetic activation even though you are running on empty, which is a classic sign of nervous system dysregulation showing up energetically.
2. You struggle to fully relax even on vacation
If your body has forgotten what safety feels like, rest can actually feel uncomfortable or unfamiliar rather than restorative.
3. Certain conversations make your whole body react before your brain catches up
A racing heart or a tight chest before you have even processed what was said points to a nervous system response overriding conscious thought.
4. You go numb or foggy under pressure instead of reacting
This is the freeze response in action, and it often correlates with root and throat chakra blockages.
5. You have a hard time saying no, even when you want to
A nervous system stuck in fawn will often show up as sacral and throat chakra imbalance together.
6. Digestive issues that flare with stress
Your gut and your sacral and solar plexus chakras are deeply tied to the vagus nerve, which is directly influenced by your nervous system state.
7. Chronic tension in the jaw, shoulders, or neck
These areas hold sympathetic activation physically, often connected to throat chakra blockage.
8. Shallow or held breath throughout the day
Breath is one of the fastest ways your nervous system communicates safety or danger to the rest of your body, and shallow breathing keeps you locked in activation.
9. Feeling disconnected from your own body
A sense of watching your life from the outside is a classic dissociative freeze pattern, frequently tied to root chakra blockage.
10. Struggling to feel safe in close relationships
Difficulty co-regulating with others, or only feeling safe when you are alone, often points to heart chakra and nervous system patterns intertwined.
Somatic Practices to Begin Reconnecting
Since this series is all about the body, not just the mind, every post going forward will include movement based and body centered practices rather than purely meditative ones. Here are a few foundational ones to start with right now.
Physiological sigh breathing
Two quick inhales through the nose followed by one long exhale through the mouth. This is one of the fastest documented ways to shift your nervous system toward calm.
Shaking or tremoring
Standing and gently shaking out your arms, legs, and torso for a minute or two mimics what animals do in the wild to discharge stress after a threat passes. It works for humans too.
3. Humming or gentle vocal toning
Your vagus nerve runs right past your vocal cords, so humming stimulates the same nerve responsible for shifting you into rest and digest mode.
4. Orienting to your environment
Slowly turning your head and looking around the room, naming a few things you see, signals to your nervous system that you are safe here and now, not back in whatever moment your body is still bracing for.
Maintenance: Keeping Your Nervous System Regulated
Nervous system regulation is not a one time fix any more than chakra balancing is. It is a practice you return to daily, in small doses, so your body slowly learns a new baseline.
• Build in short regulation breaks throughout your day rather than waiting until you are overwhelmed
• Notice which stress response you default to, fight, flight, freeze, or fawn, so you can meet it with the right practice
• Prioritize consistent sleep, since your nervous system does most of its resetting while you rest
• Spend time in co-regulating relationships and environments where your body can borrow a sense of calm from someone else
• Revisit somatic practices regularly, even on days you feel fine, the way you would maintain any other wellness habit
Where We Go From Here
This post is the foundation for everything coming next in the series. We will move through the root chakra and the freeze response, the solar plexus and the fight response, the sacral chakra and the fawn response, the throat chakra and the flight response, the heart chakra and co-regulation, and finally a full post of somatic practices matched to each chakra.
If reading through these patterns brought up a few uncomfortable moments of recognition, that is completely normal, and it is also a sign your body is ready to move that stuck energy. Reiki works beautifully alongside nervous system regulation because it gently signals safety to your body at exactly the level where these patterns live. Book a session through the Services page and let's start helping your system come back into balance, one chakra at a time.
