Are You an Emotional Empath?
If you have ever walked into a room and immediately felt the vibe shift, left a party exhausted for no obvious reason, or found yourself crying at a commercial about paper towels, you might be an empath. And here is the thing most people don't realize: there is not just one kind. There are actually over a dozen recognized types of empaths, each with their own unique way of picking up on the world around them. Over the next several weeks, we are going to explore them one by one so you can start to understand your own energetic wiring a
little better.
So what exactly is an empath? At its core, being an empath means you are highly sensitive to the energy and emotions of the people, animals, and environments around you. While most people can sympathize with how someone else feels, empaths go a step further. They feel it. Not just emotionally, but sometimes physically too. It is like having your personal radar turned all the way up, all the time, whether you asked for it or not.
This week we are starting with the most widely known: the Emotional Empath. This is the person who doesn't just sympathize with how you feel, they actually feel it themselves. Your best friend calls you upset about a fight with her sister, and by the end of the conversation you are also upset about the fight with her sister. Emotional empaths absorb the feelings of the people around them as if those feelings were their own. It makes you incredibly easy to connect with, but without some energetic boundaries, you can end up lugging around everyone else's feelings like emotional baggage you never packed. It can also show up in subtler ways, like feeling completely drained after spending time with certain people, or sensing that something is off with someone before they have said a single word about it. And it is not always the heavy stuff either. Emotional empaths often feel other people's joy just as intensely, which means you are also the person who tears up at a stranger's wedding or gets genuinely excited about someone else's good news like it happened to you. Once you understand the signs, recognize the challenges, and pick up a few practical tools, this sensitivity becomes one of your greatest strengths.
Some of the most effective tools for emotional empaths are also the simplest. Grounding is a great place to start, and it is exactly what it sounds like: practices that help you feel rooted in your own energy so outside emotions have less room to take over. This can be as simple as walking barefoot outside, sitting quietly with your feet flat on the floor, or visualizing roots growing from your feet down into the earth. Energy clearing is another powerful one. At the end of the day, especially after a lot of social interaction, take a few minutes to consciously release what you picked up. A shower works beautifully for this since water is naturally cleansing. Just set the intention that you are washing away anything that is not yours. Boundaries are also a big piece of the puzzle, and not just the kind you set with words. Energetic boundaries are about deciding before you walk into a situation how much you are willing to take on. A simple visualization of a bubble of light around you sounds a little out there until the day it actually works and you walk out of a tense family dinner feeling completely fine. These tools take practice, but the more you use them the more natural they become.
Next week we will look at another type of empath, and trust me, things are about to get even more interesting.
