The Higher Heart Chakra: The Chakra Between Love and Truth
Sitting between your heart chakra and your throat chakra, just behind your upper sternum near the thymus gland, is one of the most underappreciated energy centers in the entire human system: the Higher Heart Chakra. Sometimes called the Thymus Chakra, the Sacred Heart, this little powerhouse is the place where personal love upgrades into something much bigger.
The regular heart chakra governs love, connection, and compassion in the interpersonal sense. But the Higher Heart takes all of that and elevates it into divine love. Unconditional love. The kind that is not dependent on the other person being lovable, or on the situation being easy, or on you feeling good that day. It is the love that mystics throughout history have called the highest vibration, the one that heals everything it touches.
This chakra is also where your spiritual immune system lives. Yes, really. The thymus gland beneath it governs your physical immune system, and the chakra that corresponds to it governs your energetic one. Here is what it looks like when it needs attention.
What Does It Mean When It Is Blocked or Dormant?
The Higher Heart Chakra often closes when we have been so deeply hurt that personal love stopped feeling safe, but before we have developed enough spiritual depth to access the divine version. It also tends to be blocked when our spiritual practice is intellectual rather than felt, when we know all the right things but cannot quite land in the open-hearted space they point to. It is a subtle chakra, but when it opens, people around you feel it immediately.
Signs Your Higher Heart Chakra Needs Attention
1. You can say 'I love you' but it feels performative
The words come out but they feel hollow. You mean them on some level but there is a quality of going through the motions rather than actually transmitting something real. The Higher Heart is where authentic love transmission happens.
2. You struggle to forgive at the soul level
You have intellectually forgiven someone, you have done the journaling, you have talked it through, but in your body and your energy field you are still holding it. True forgiveness happens in the Higher Heart.
3. You get sick a lot
Frequent colds, immune system issues, slow healing. The thymus gland connection makes this chakra directly relevant to physical health. Energetically supporting it often has noticeable effects on physical immunity.
4. You feel like your love always comes with conditions
Even with the people you love most, you notice a subtle score-keeping happening. A sense that love is earned rather than given freely. This is not a character flaw. It is a Higher Heart opening waiting to happen.
5. You cannot speak from your heart
You feel deeply but when you try to express it, it either comes out wrong or does not come out at all. The Higher Heart is the bridge between the emotional depth of the heart and the expression capacity of the throat.
6. You feel spiritually generous but personally resentful
A strange split where you can hold great compassion for humanity in the abstract but have a hard time with the actual specific humans in your actual life. The Higher Heart integrates these two levels.
7. You feel disconnected from your soul's purpose
One of the Higher Heart's functions is connecting you to your soul's intent in this lifetime, not just what you want but why you are actually here. When it is closed, that sense of deeper purpose feels inaccessible.
8. A sense that something is missing from your spiritual practice
You have the root, the heart, the crown. You meditate. You practice. And yet there is a quality of love or grace or openness that you cannot quite reach. The Higher Heart might be the missing piece.
How to Open and Work with Your Higher Heart Chakra
Tap your thymus gland daily
Yes, literally tap your upper chest with your fingertips in a steady rhythm for thirty to sixty seconds, especially first thing in the morning. This is called thymus thumping and it activates both the physical gland and the energetic chakra. Strange but effective.
Practice unconditional love, starting with yourself
Choose one interaction per day where you love without expectation. No agenda, no score-keeping. Let it start with how you treat yourself in difficult moments. This is the Higher Heart's workout routine.
Work with turquoise, aquamarine, and pink-green crystals
Kunzite, green tourmaline, rose quartz, and aquamarine all resonate beautifully with the Higher Heart. Wearing or carrying them close to the upper chest is a simple daily support.
Reiki healing focused on the Higher Heart
Many Reiki practitioners work with the seven main chakras but may not specifically address the Higher Heart. Requesting focused work here can open something that clients describe as a kind of sweetness or warmth in the chest that feels distinctly different from regular heart chakra work.
Practice loving-kindness meditation
The traditional metta meditation, which involves deliberately generating feelings of goodwill toward yourself, loved ones, neutral people, difficult people, and all beings, is essentially a Higher Heart workout. Ten minutes a day is transformative.
Speak more love out loud
Write letters you do not send. Call people to tell them what they mean to you. Say the true loving thing more often than feels comfortable. The Higher Heart bridges love and expression, and using that bridge strengthens it.
Affirmations for the Higher Heart Chakra
Try: 'I love without conditions.' 'My heart is strong and open.' 'I forgive freely and release the past.' 'I am a vessel for divine love.' 'I speak from my heart with truth and compassion.'
Keeping Your Higher Heart Chakra Active and Clear
The Higher Heart Chakra stays open through a consistent practice of choosing love over fear in the small, ordinary moments of life. This is not a grand gesture. It is the moment you choose curiosity over judgment. The moment you extend grace to yourself instead of criticism. The moment you say the real thing instead of the safe thing.
Regular self-Reiki on the upper chest area, sound healing, and heart-centered meditation all support this chakra ongoing. And keep building your capacity to receive love, not just give it. The Higher Heart needs both directions flowing to stay healthy.
When this chakra is truly open, other people feel it in your presence before you say a word. That is the Higher Heart doing its work.
