Aphantasia and Meditation: Turns Out Not Everyone Can See Their Guided Meditation
For most of my life I assumed I could see things in my mind just like everyone else. My version of seeing was really knowing, which I will get into later, but at the time I did not know there was a difference. I did not know there was anything to know.
Then one day I was talking with my partner and he mentioned seeing things vividly, almost like a movie playing in his head. Full color, full motion, the whole thing. And I remember thinking, ohhhh. No. Not me.
That sent me looking, and I found a name for what I have. There is a simple test for it too, which I will walk you through in a minute. I read through it and realized, yep, this is me. Once I had the word for it, I started noticing it everywhere. People casually mentioning what they see when they close their eyes, as if that was just a normal thing brains did. I do not know if it was suddenly being talked about more or if I was just finally tuned into it, but either way, I could not believe I had gone this many years on this earth without ever hearing about it.
I started wondering how many other people have this and do not know it either. And in doing this work with people for awhile now, I realized I am far from the only one. Some people fully visualize. Some people get a knowing instead. Neither one is wrong, just different. I do not want this post to be about me so much as it is about handing you the same lightbulb moment, in case you have been walking around with this and never had a name for it either.
Here is the ridiculously simple test, and it might wreck you a little if you have never thought about it before. Close your eyes and picture an apple. Not the word apple, not the idea of an apple. An actual apple, sitting there in your mind. Can you see it? Is it red or green? Does it have a stem? Can you rotate it?
If you got a picture, congratulations, you have a functioning mind's eye and you probably assumed everyone did too. If you got nothing, or just a vague sense of apple-ness with no actual image, welcome to the club. We can't even comfort ourselves with a fake apple.
This is called aphantasia. It means the mind does not generate visual images. No beach, no apple, no face of someone you love, nothing. Close your eyes and try to see something and you get darkness and a concept instead. You know what a beach is, and even how it sounds. You just cannot show yourself one.
Here is the part that matters most for anyone doing this work with me. Aphantasia does not break meditation. It does not disqualify you from guided visualization, energy work, or anything spiritual that gets described in visual language. It just means you experience it differently than the instructions were written for, and that is fine, because the instructions were never really about the picture anyway.
When a meditation script says see a golden light filling your body, and I cannot see it, I still feel it. I get a warmth. A sense of expansion. A knowing that the light is there, doing its thing, even with no image of it. When I am told to visualize my spirit guide standing in front of me, I do not get a face. I get a presence. An unmistakable feeling of not being alone in the room. That is not a consolation prize version of the exercise. That is just what it looks like when it happens in my kind of mind.
I have come to think of it less like I am missing a screen and more like I have a different input method entirely. Some people meditate with their eyes, in a manner of speaking. I meditate with something else. A felt sense. An inner nudge that says yes, that's it, right there, even with nothing to look at.
If you have ever sat through a guided meditation feeling like you were failing because nothing showed up on your internal screen, I want you to actually hear this. You were not failing. You were probably taking in the information through a different channel than the script assumed you had. The meditation still worked. The energy still moved. You still went somewhere, even if you did not get a postcard from it.
So if you try the apple test and nothing shows up, you are not broken and you are not behind. You are just running on a different operating system, and it still gets you where you are going.
